Censorship struggle: Yami Gautam’s “Article 370” banned in Gulf countries

Yami Gautam starrer “Article 370” faced an unexpected setback as it was banned in Gulf countries, casting a shadow over its global success. “Article 370” is the second movie after Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone’s ‘Fighter’ that was too banned in all Gulf countries except UAE.

Since its release on 23rd February, Article 370 has been on a winning streak, earning accolades from audiences and critics alike for its action-packed political thriller narrative. However, the ban in Gulf countries comes as a blow to the film’s international distribution, depriving audiences in the region of the opportunity to experience this acclaimed Indian cinematic offering.

In the movie, Gautam plays Zooni Haksar, an intelligence officer who explores universal human experiences within the complex socio-political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. Themes of identity, struggle, and resilience resonate deeply throughout the narrative, fostering understanding and dialogue amidst turbulent times.

The ban in Gulf countries raises questions about censorship and limited cultural exchange, especially considering the region’s thriving tourism industry and the popularity of Indian cinema among its residents. The absence of films like Article 370 underscores the need for greater collaboration and inclusivity in the global film industry.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the film’s relevance during a recent address in Jammu, noting its potential to provide accurate information about the revocation of Article 370 in 2019.

Directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, the film also features Priyamani, Arun Govil and Kiran Karmarkar in key roles.
