A24 has officially secured the US distribution rights for Luca Guadagnino’s latest film “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig, Deadline has reported. The deal, which recently closed, positions A24 as the perfect home for this daring adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel, aligning with the distributor’s reputation for handling provocative and boundary-pushing content. Craig’s performance in “Queer” is expected to be a significant departure from his iconic role as James Bond, further showcasing his versatility as an actor.

“Queer” began making waves among distributors when it was first screened by CAA Media Finance in late June, with A24 emerging as a strong contender early on. Despite interest from other distributors, A24 ultimately won out, setting the stage for a theatrical release. The film is set to make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, followed by a North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and will also feature in a Spotlight Gala at the New York Film Festival.

Set in 1950s Mexico City, Queer tells the story of William Lee, an American expatriate in his late forties, leading a solitary life within a small American enclave. His existence takes a turn when he encounters Eugene Allerton, a young student whose presence stirs William to seek a meaningful connection for the first time in years.

The film has a stellar cast including Drew Starkey, Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Andra Ursuta, Michael Borremans, and David Lowery.

Produced by Fremantle, Fremantle North America, Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment (a Fremantle Group company), and Luca Guadagnino for his Frenesy Film Company, “Queer” was brought to life with the collaboration of Cinecittà and Frame by Frame, with Fremantle Group financing the project.
