In a major new game-to-film adaptation, Isabela Merced, best known for her roles in The Last of Us, Superman and Alien: Romulus, has been cast to lead the upcoming big-screen version of Sega’s cult video game The House of the Dead, Deadline has reported exclusively. The project will be written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who previously brought Sega-style zombie action to cinemas with the long-running Resident Evil adaptations. Industry sources say the film is being positioned as the launchpad for a new franchise. First released in 1997, The House of the Dead became a landmark arcade hit with its fast-paced horror gameplay and innovative depiction of agile, fast-moving zombies. The game’s influence later extended to films such as Dawn of the Dead and World War Z, helping redefine undead creatures beyond the slow-moving archetype popularised by George A. Romero. Set within a fictional government agency called AMS, the game follows operatives tasked with stopping shadowy organisations threatening global security. International sales for the project will be launched by Rocket Science at the upcoming European Film Market, where the film is expected to draw strong interest. CAA Media Finance is handling domestic representation. Producers view the adaptation as a long-term franchise opportunity, boosted by Merced’s rising profile and renewed audience appetite for genre-driven IP. Anderson is producing alongside his longtime collaborator Jeremy Bolt, Sega’s Toru Nakahara, and Story Kitchen executives Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson. Merced will also serve as an executive producer. The project follows the success of Sega’s recent screen ventures, including Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Described as “a top Sega priority,” the film is intended to deliver an immersive, real-time narrative with a modern twist on the original material. Early concept art for the project was first unveiled around 18 months ago. Merced recently appeared as Hawkgirl in Superman under director James Gunn and is set to reprise the role in Man of Tomorrow. She also featured in the second season of The Last of Us and is expected to return for Season 3. Her upcoming slate includes the features Psyche and Ibelin. The new adaptation follows a poorly received 2003 film version directed by Uwe Boll, which failed to gain traction with critics or audiences. Insiders believe the current creative team, combined with Merced’s star power and Sega’s renewed focus on premium adaptations, gives the franchise a far stronger chance of success this time around.
