Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to play the lead role as Maggie in a new production of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at London’s Almeida Theatre. Directed by Rebecca Frecknall, the play opens on 10th December and will run until 1st February, 2024. This marks Edgar-Jones’ return to the Almeida, where she starred in Albion in 2020, before launching her film career with roles in Twisters and On Swift Horses. The production, which is Frecknall’s third Tennessee Williams play at the Almeida, follows the success of her Olivier Award-winning versions of Summer and Smoke and A Streetcar Named Desire. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning drama from 1955 that explores the tensions within a Southern family gathered for Big Daddy’s birthday. Joining Edgar-Jones in the star-studded cast are Kingsley Ben-Adir as Brick, Big Daddy’s grief-stricken, alcoholic son, and Lennie James as Big Daddy himself. Frecknall’s previous work with Tennessee Williams’ plays has set high expectations, with both Summer and Smoke and A Streetcar Named Desire transferring to the West End. As she tackles Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, audiences can look forward to her signature intensity and depth in this emotionally charged production. Beyond Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the Almeida Theatre has an exciting season ahead. Next summer, Frecknall will direct Ruth Wilson and Michael Shannon in Eugene O’Neill’s A Moon for the Misbegotten. Other highlights include a new adaptation of Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, and the premieres of Chris Bush’s Otherland and Ava Pickett’s 1536, adding fresh voices and narratives to the theatre’s lineup.
