Tom Cruise has officially released the title of his eighth Mission: Impossible installment, revealing it as The Final Reckoning. Originally intended to be titled Dead Reckoning Part Two, this latest adventure now stands as a climactic chapter of its own, with the anticipated release date set for 23 May, 2025. The film has faced multiple delays, moving from its initial 2022 date due to the pandemic and the recent SAG-AFTRA strike.

Accompanying the title announcement, Cruise released a poster for The Final Reckoning, captioning it with a teaser for fans—“Every choice has led to this.”

The film’s first trailer showcases the action Cruise is known for, featuring scenes of him scuba diving through a wrecked submarine, flying and leaping out of a biplane, and, of course, sprinting through dangerous situations. Angela Bassett returns as CIA Director Erika Sloane, reprising her role from Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

In Dead Reckoning, Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, battles a powerful AI known as The Entity—a digital foe with the potential to predict his moves and unleash global chaos if it falls into the wrong hands. After narrowly surviving a train wreck in the previous film, Ethan learns that The Entity is hidden aboard an old Russian submarine. However, he’s not alone in his quest; Gabriel (Esai Morales), an old adversary, is also hunting for the elusive AI.

Returning cast members include franchise staples Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, and Pom Klementieff, alongside Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, and Greg Tarzan Davis. The Final Reckoning also introduces new faces to the series, including Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman.

Director Christopher McQuarrie, a long-time collaborator with Cruise, returns at the helm, having directed Rogue Nation, Fallout, and Dead Reckoning. He co-wrote the screenplay with franchise creator Bruce Geller and Erik Jendresen. In addition to starring, Cruise serves as producer, joined by McQuarrie, with Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger, and Susan Novick as executive producers.
