Apple TV+ has officially greenlit Lucky, a gripping limited series starring Anya Taylor-Joy, who also joins as an executive producer. Based on Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel and Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club selection, the series is a production by Hello Sunshine, with Reese Witherspoon and Jonathan Tropper at the helm. Taylor-Joy takes on the role of a young woman who has left behind a criminal past but must confront it once more in a desperate bid to escape. Reflecting on her involvement, Taylor-Joy said, “Hello Sunshine continues to do a fantastic job of championing women’s voices, and I’m thrilled to be joining the team alongside Jonathan, Cassie, and Apple TV+ to bring Lucky to life.” This marks Taylor-Joy’s return to television following her Emmy-nominated performance in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. Tropper, under his overall deal with Apple TV+, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Cassie Pappas (Silo). The project has been in development since summer 2023 and is eyeing a spring 2025 start. Tropper is also the creator of Apple’s upcoming Your Friends and Neighbors, starring Jon Hamm, which already secured a second season renewal. Hello Sunshine, the production company behind hits like The Morning Show, The Last Thing He Told Me, and Surface, continues its successful partnership with Apple TV+. Witherspoon highlighted the importance of telling female-driven stories, said, “Reese’s Book Club began with the goal of deepening connections – to the stories, to the storytellers, and to the community we are building. It is incredibly rewarding to amplify these female-centric stories and their authors, see our community connect with them, then see them take on a whole new life on screen. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Apple TV+ and the incomparable Anya Taylor-Joy.” The series brings together Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, Taylor-Joy’s Ladykiller production banner, and Apple Studios. Executive producers include Tropper and Pappas, ensuring a blend of storytelling expertise and star power.
