The iconic DC villain Clayface is officially stepping into the spotlight, with Mike Flanagan tapped to write the script for his debut in the new DC Universe. The news comes over a year after Flanagan first pitched his vision for the shape-shifting antagonist.

Deadline has confirmed that Flanagan, known for his work on psychological horror films, is developing the script while also working on the upcoming Exorcist reboot. According to reports, DC Studios is still searching for a director.

In a 2021 tweet, Flanagan expressed his ambition to approach Clayface as a “horror/thriller/tragedy.” Sources revealed in March 2023 that his take on the character will move away from the traditional villain narrative. This new direction emerged following Flanagan’s meeting with DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran, who took over the reins in 2022.

Although Flanagan’s project isn’t tied to Matt Reeves’ DC Elseworld universe, speculation continues about Clayface’s involvement in The Batman 2, with Reeves reportedly making the character a significant addition to the sequel.

Clayface first appeared in Detective Comics #40 in June 1940. The original Clayface, an actor turned criminal, took inspiration from a horror character he once played, using his new identity to wreak havoc. Over time, other characters adopted the Clayface moniker, including a scientist with hormone irregularities as introduced in 1970s comics. The villain has become a frequent adversary of Batman and has appeared across multiple media platforms, from animated series to video games. Brian McManamon portrayed him in Gotham (The CW), while Lorraine Burroughs brought him to life in Pennyworth (Epix/HBO Max).
