ITV’s Director of Drama, Polly Hill, alongside Senior Drama Commissioner Helen Ziegler, has given the green light to Saviour, a bold reimagining of the crime and courtroom genre. This upcoming series is produced by Nisha Parti’s Parti Productions and marks the screenwriting debut of Imran Mahmood, a full-time criminal barrister.
Nisha Parti expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to bring this gripping story to life. “I am so grateful to Polly Hill and ITV for seeing the potential in our script and giving us a chance to make this wonderfully gripping story,” she commented. “I have always been a fan of the courtroom drama and am excited to bring a new version from a different perspective that feels unexpected and authentic with such a brilliant team to support us on our journey.”
Saviour is set to premiere on ITV1 and STV, with streaming options available on ITVX and STV Player. Helen Ziegler will oversee the production for ITV, with Drama Republic co-producing alongside Parti Productions. The acclaimed Peter Moffat, known for his work on Scoop, 61st Street, Silk, and Criminal Justice, will executive produce the drama alongside Nisha Parti.
The storyline introduces Ben, a medical student who finds himself in a life-altering situation after attending a fancy-dress party dressed as a police officer. When he witnesses an attack on Xenia, the woman he’s infatuated with, he intervenes, leading to a tense and dramatic encounter in a tunnel. The result is a dead man, a desperate call to his father—a respected police officer—and Ben facing a murder charge.
The series also introduces Indy, a criminal barrister admired for her dedication and professionalism. As she defends Ben, Indy finds herself navigating a complex web of police corruption, intense media scrutiny, and personal secrets that threaten both her career and family life.
Screenwriter Imran Mahmood is thrilled to bring his expertise to the series. “I am thrilled to be bringing to screen my first scripted TV series for ITV and Parti Productions,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to use my experience as a criminal barrister to explore the real criminal justice system at work—both its strengths and its failings—and there is no better medium than the screen to explore it.”
Polly Hill emphasized the compelling nature of the script, stating, “We are delighted to be working with Nisha and to have commissioned Imran’s first original series. The script delivers a really compelling case that has you hooked in from the start and introduces us to a great new leading character in Indy. Imran’s knowledge of the law makes this series feel utterly authentic while delivering a brilliantly original story that will give the audiences all the twists and surprises they demand.”
Casting details for Saviour will be announced closer to the filming start date in 2025.
