Jangarh Kalam lives on: Landmark Tribal Art exhibition opens in Delhi

A striking celebration of India’s tribal art heritage opens today at Shridharani Art Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, as the Raza Foundation, in collaboration with Triveni Kala Sangam and with support from Progressive Art Gallery, presents “Jangarh Kalam from Patangarh Continued” — a landmark exhibition showcasing the rich legacy of Gond art.

The exhibition, which will be inaugurated today evening, brings together over 50 tribal artists from the Gond heartland of Madhya Pradesh, each drawing from the stylistic and spiritual foundations laid by the legendary Jangarh Singh Shyam.

Recognized as the pioneer who reimagined Gond painting as a modern art form, Jangarh Singh Shyam’s influence continues to resonate through the vibrant lines, mythical motifs, and dreamlike compositions of today’s generation of tribal artists. This exhibition serves as both a tribute to his revolutionary vision and a celebration of a living tradition that remains rooted in ancestral wisdom while evolving with new expressions and narratives.

Set within the cultural precincts of Triveni Kala Sangam, the show will be on view until July 10, 2025, daily from 11 am to 7 pm. Visitors can expect an immersive encounter with a movement that speaks not only of folklore and forest life but also of resistance, memory, and modernity.

“We hope this event will be a moment of celebration, reflection, and recognition of India’s vibrant tribal genius—alive, evolving, and essential,” say the curators of the exhibition.

More than a gallery event, “Jangarh Kalam from Patangarh Continued” is a collective act of cultural preservation and creative resurgence, reminding audiences of the dynamic energy and political relevance of indigenous art in contemporary India.
