In a surprise drop, the official Avatar account on X confirmed that the first trailer for James Cameron’s highly anticipated threequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will debut exclusively before screenings of Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Audiences catching Marvel’s latest superhero reboot will be treated to their first glimpse of what’s next in Cameron’s visually dazzling universe, as Fire and Ash picks up the narrative right after The Way of Water.

Set for release on 19 December, Fire and Ash expands the Avatar mythology with the introduction of two new Na’vi clans: The Wind Traders, aerial nomads who float through the skies in hot air balloon-like contraptions, and the Fire People, fierce warriors mounted on flying beasts. The trailer teases an intense tribal clash, including a scene where a Na’vi is taken down by a flaming arrow.

“We can not live like this, baby,” Jake Sully (played again by Sam Worthington) tells Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) in a dramatic moment from the footage. “We can not live with this hate.”

The story follows the fallout from The Way of Water, which saw Jake’s family ally with the ocean-dwelling Metkayina tribe to fight off the human-led Resources Development Administration. Now, the threat comes from within: the Ash People, a breakaway Na’vi clan who have abandoned their traditional beliefs and turned against Jake and the forest Na’vi.

The trailer was first unveiled at CinemaCon in April, but this weekend marks the first time the footage will be seen by general audiences.

The Avatar saga has already made box office history. Both the original Avatar (2009) and its 2022 sequel The Way of Water grossed over $2 billion worldwide, sitting at No. 1 and No. 3 on the list of highest-grossing films of all time. If Fire and Ash continues the trend, Avatar will become the first film franchise ever to land three titles in the $2 billion club.

The Avatar universe is far from over. Cameron is already deep into planning the fourth and fifth installments, scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively.

With a fiery new conflict and high-stakes emotional drama, Fire and Ash promises to raise the bar yet again for blockbuster storytelling—and it all starts this weekend in a darkened theater near you.
