‘Michael’ Sets Early Records with $18.5M Global Box Office Start

Michael Jackson’s biopic ‘The Michael’ has made a powerful start at the international box office, earning $18.5 million on its opening day across multiple markets, including preview screenings. Excluding previews, the film generated $16.6 million on Wednesday alone, signalling strong audience interest in the musical biopic.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, the film has already set several early benchmarks. It has emerged as one of the strongest opening days for a musical biopic in several territories, outperforming comparable titles such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis and Rocketman.

The film has dominated box office charts in key markets, consistently ranking at No. 1 and capturing a significant share of daily admissions. In several regions, it has recorded the highest opening day ever for a musical biopic, while also outperforming recent high-profile releases in terms of market share and per-theatre averages.

Produced by Graham King and written by John Logan, Michael is being rolled out widely across international markets, with additional territories including China and India joining the release schedule this week.

Early momentum has also been supported by strong presales and premium-format screenings, including IMAX showings in North America. Industry estimates suggest that advance bookings are outpacing recent releases such as Project Hail Mary.

Heading into the weekend, the film is projected to reach a global opening of around $150 million, with $65–70 million expected from the domestic market. If achieved, this would mark a record-breaking debut for a musical biopic, surpassing the benchmark set by Straight Outta Compton.
