Andre Holland-Led Boxing Drama ‘They Fight’ Unveils Trailer Ahead of Tribeca Festival Premiere Hulu has released the first trailer for They Fight, an upcoming boxing drama starring Andre Holland, Wendell Pierce and Samira Wiley. The film is set to make its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival on Monday before arriving on Hulu on 17 July. Written and directed by Sheldon Candis, They Fight is inspired by the 2018 documentary of the same name and tells a story of redemption, resilience and the transformative power of sport. Alongside Holland, the cast includes Wendell Pierce, Samira Wiley, Anthony B. Jenkins, Toussaint Francois Battiste and Mykelti Williamson. The film follows Walt Manigan, portrayed by Holland, a former convict determined to rebuild his life and reconnect with Ketta (Wiley), the mother of his young son. Having left his own boxing career behind, Walt finds a renewed sense of purpose coaching a team of teenage boxers in Washington, D.C., as they prepare to pursue a national championship dream. The newly released trailer highlights Walt’s struggle to move beyond his past while earning the trust of those around him. In one of the film’s key moments, Holland’s character declares, “If y’all can see past my mistakes, I promise you I’ll give you everything I’ve got.” Candis directed the feature from a screenplay co-written with Andrew Renzi, whose 2018 documentary served as the foundation for the adaptation. The film is produced by Renzi, Jason Michael Berman and Ben Renzo. Discussing the inspiration behind the project, Candis said, “They Fight is my love letter to one of my all-time favorite directors John G. Avildsen.” Referring to the filmmaker behind Rocky and the original Karate Kid trilogy, Candis added, “It’s a Karate Kid-inspired narrative punched in the face with a John Hughes coming of age story about Southeast D.C. kids fighting to dream within amateur youth boxing.” The director also reflected on the emotional core of the film and its central character. “Andre Holland plays the real life character of Walt Manigan within this documentary adaption of a man searching to reclaim his soul,” he said. Blending sports drama with themes of family, forgiveness and personal transformation, They Fight aims to bring a deeply human story to audiences when it premieres at Tribeca before its streaming debut on Hulu next month.
