London witnessed a wave of public fury after footage of large number of MPs leaving the House of Commons surfaces on internet just moments before the Prime Minister was set to address the final Grenfell Inquiry report. The inquiry’s landmark findings pointed to “decades of failure” and “systematic dishonesty” across various sectors, which contributed to the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire that claimed 72 lives.

The walk out started just after Sir Keir Starmer delivered a speech on the inquiry’s conclusions, The action has been widely condemned for its insensitivity, particularly in front of the families affected by the tragedy, who were present in the chamber. The timing of their departure, especially following Prime Minister’s Questions, has tiggered the public, who voiced their frustration over social media.

Posting footage of the moment, journalist Nadine White described the scene as a “whole exodus,” remarking that the MPs’ actions “speaks volumes.” She tweeted, “Earlier today, lots of MPs decided to leave the Commons before the PM’s statement on the Grenfell Inquiry report. Bounced. A whole exodus. Speaks volumes.”

MPs often leave the chamber to attend other meetings or fulfill ministerial duties, but their absence during this critical statement struck a sour chord, with many Britons calling their behavior disrespectful. White commented further, “Sure, they’re busy, we’re all busy. But the exodus is giving ‘who cares?’. Disappointing to see.”

Social media users were equally outraged, with one calling for the MPs to be “named and shamed,” while another slammed the exodus as “disgusting.” One frustrated commenter asked, “What exactly are we paying them for? They’ve only just gone back!”
