Legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki has been named one of the winners of the 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Award, often referred as Asia’s Nobel Prize. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation made the announcement on Saturday, recognizing Miyazaki’s powerful contributions through his work in animation.

As a co-founder of Studio Ghibli and the visionary behind celebrated films like “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke,” Miyazaki has brought complex themes, including environmental protection and the pursuit of peace, into the realm of children’s entertainment. The foundation praised his ability to make these weighty topics accessible to younger audiences.

Along with Miyazaki, three individuals and one organization were also chosen as recipients of this year’s prestigious award, which includes Environmental advocate Farhan, Farwiza from Indonesia, Vietnamese physician Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, Bhutanese scholar Phuntsho and Rural Doctors Movement (organisation). The award is named after the late Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, who was known for his strong ethical leadership, the award has been presented annually since 1957.

The formal award ceremony will take place in Manila this November, where the recipients will be celebrated for their outstanding achievements in advancing integrity, societal development, and humanitarian efforts across the region.
