Channel 4 is set to debut This is Gaza, an intimate documentary chronicling the life and displacement of Palestinian filmmaker and journalist Yousef Hammash. Known for his award-winning reporting on the Israel-Hamas war, Hammash steps in front of the camera for the first time to recount his own story. Hammash, a key member of Channel 4 News’ Emmy and BAFTA-winning team, rose to prominence with his reporting from Gaza after the devastating October 7 Hamas attack. While his work drew global attention, it also came at a personal cost—six months later, Hammash and his family were displaced, targeted for his work as a journalist. The documentary, directed by Tom Besley and executive produced by Ed Fraser and Girish Juneja, captures Hammash’s emotional journey as he revisits his footage and recounts the painful decision to leave his home. From the upheaval in Gaza to his journey south to Rafah, the film delves into the personal toll of reporting on a warzone, weaving together interviews, unseen footage, and moments of raw vulnerability. “This film about Yousef’s reporting reveals a deeply human story told from the heart,” said Ed Fraser. This is Gaza will premiere in two days on Channel 4’s streaming service, offering viewers a poignant perspective on the seismic events following October 7. The release follows the BBC’s recent announcement of Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone [working title], co-directed by Hammash and Jamie Roberts (Escape from Kabul Airport).
