Netflix’s latest comedy series Big Mistakes, created by and starring Dan Levy, has arrived with a mix of family drama and crime, set against the diverse backdrop of New Jersey.

The series follows siblings Nicky and Morgan, played by Levy and Taylor Ortega, whose attempt to help their ailing grandmother spirals into a dangerous entanglement with organised crime. As the duo stumble through increasingly high-stakes situations, the show leans into chaotic humour and unlikely survival.

For Ortega, the project carried personal significance. “It was surreal getting to film in my home state,” she said. “I grew up in New Jersey and was obsessed with film and television and never thought I’d be returning home for such a major project and moment in my life.”

Filmed over 46 days, the production made extensive use of locations across the state, employing hundreds of cast and crew while collaborating with local businesses and communities. Location manager Mia Thompson highlighted the support from residents and authorities, noting: “I’ve really enjoyed shooting in New Jersey. We have quite a number of recurring locations that have all just been wonderful — not only the home owners, but the business owners, the towns, the local police, the local fire departments, the town clerks. It’s been a really great experience.”

Among the key filming sites was Edison Millwork & Hardware, a long-standing family-run store that doubled as a central location in the series. Thompson said, “It’s one of the few mom and pop hardware stores that are left anywhere, really, so it was really great to find this location that fits very perfectly with our story.”

Another prominent location, the Wyoming Presbyterian Church in Millburn, served as both a workplace and residence for Levy’s character. “We’ve utilized every inch of space of that church inside and out,” Thompson said. “They’ve enjoyed the experience just as much as we have.”

Production spanned multiple towns and environments—from urban centres like Jersey City to quieter suburban pockets—reflecting the state’s visual diversity. “One thing about New Jersey is that it’s so diverse. The various neighborhoods offer different kinds of looks and aesthetics,” Thompson added. “You have everything that you could ask for.”

Beyond its storytelling, the series also focused on sustainability during filming, incorporating clean energy solutions, electric vehicles and reduced fuel consumption. The production also contributed to the local community through food donations.
